A town of 50,000 in the North East of Uruguay, close to the Brasilian border, Melo was founded in the late 18th century. Surrounded by rich farmland, it has seen its fortunes rise and fall with agriculture. Melo was the epicenter of Blanco opposition to Colorado governments during the civil wars of the 19th century. I have been there regularly, when visiting friends.
